PLANETE+ DOC in South Sudan

Two distant points on the globe, one documentary film - the PLANETE+ DOC FILM FESTIVAL comes to the youngest nation on Earth!
Simultaneously with Polish edition, we are organizing a festival in Juba - the capital of South Sudan. It will be PLANETE+ DOC FILM FESTIVAL’s second visit to that city, but the first one to take place in a sovereign nation that has proclaimed its independence on July 9, 2011.
PLANETE+ DOC FILM FESTIVAL will take place at the university which has, after many years, moved back here from Khartoum. During the war, the university campus was turned into military barracks from which, for 2 years, Osama bin Laden led his organization. Today, it is gradually being repopulated by students.
The citizens of South Sudan will be able to watch a dozen or so latest documentary films. After the screenings, the audience is invited to participate in discussions which we will report on via the PLANETE+ DOC FILM FESTIVAL website and Facebook.
The Juba PLANETE+ DOC FILM FESTIVAL will open on Saturday, May12, with the film "Justice for Sale”. Audiences in Poland and South Sudan will watch it simultaneously. Following this international screening, an equally international discussion and meeting with one of the filmmakers - Ilse van Helzen - will take place.
The second film to be screened simultaneously in both countries will be “Payback”. The film will be screened on May 18. The screening will be followed by the videoconference with our special guest Margaret Atwood, who will share with Polish and South Sudanese audiences her thoughts on debts that have to be repaid by all of us. From Canada, through Poland, all the way to South Sudan.
The war between the North and South parts of Sudan was waged for over 20 years. It cost the lives of almost 2.5 million people, and displaced another 4 million. In 2005, peace talks took place which led to a referendum on the potential split of Sudan in January 2011. Over 98% of the inhabitants of South Sudan voted for secession. On July 9 2011, the Republic of South Sudan was inscribed onto world maps as the 193rd country on the globe.
The new nation is faced with tremendous challenges. It is one of the least developed and poorest countries on our planet, and its relations with its northern neighbour are still tense. South Sudan’s problems are further compounded by seasonal tribe wars.

PLANETE+ DOC FILM FESTIVAL in South Sudan is organized by Julia Prus and the Global Development Research Group.
