Debate: The Murky Side of Journalism: When a Journalist Becomes a Criminal

Friday, May 18, 2012, 6 p.m., Kinoteka, following the screening of the film “The Ambassador”

Languages of the debate: Polish and English

Known for his distinctive sense of humour, director and journalist Mads Brügger takes the audience to a place where the funny becomes the horrifying and vice versa, uncovering a bitter fragment of African reality. The director buys a forged diplomatic ID on the Internet. It is a document that allows one to smuggle diamonds in Africa. He takes on the role of a Liberian honorary consul in the Republic of Central Africa, and in this disguise penetrates the black market, entering a world of blood diamonds and African corruption. The line between reality and fiction gets blurred.
Mads Brügger’s “The Ambassador” poses questions on the nature of journalistic ethics that we will attempt to answer during the debate. Where is the line a journalists shouldn’t cross? Do you need to corrupt others in order to make a good film on corruption? What new avenues can a journalists pursue – participatory journalism and citizen journalism?
