The Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska (1923- 2012) was hardly known abroad when the Swedish Academy gave her the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1996. Afterwards she became perhaps the most celebrated poet of our time. In her poems she treated a man in all his vanity with mild mockery and wonder: “he is a bit foolish, but he deserves our “sympathy”. In the documentary, prominent figures from Polish cultural life also shed their light on the poet. “End and Beginning” is both a unique portrait of the poet and, with her poems as a guide, a journey through her work and the history of Poland.
